This Flight Attendant Tip Friday is all about getting outside of your comfort zone and trying something new.
For me, part of the allure of traveling is trying something new in the destination. It doesn’t matter if I’m in another state or another country – I try and find something that is unique to that area. It can be food, an activity, a cultural festival, anything. The last thing that I want to do when I’m traveling is have, do, or eat something that I can readily find at home.
Years ago, I was in NYC with my delegation for a Model United Nations conference. Our faculty advisor chose to have different cuisines for dinner. This particular night, he chose Mediterranean. So, most of our group ate at this Mediterranean restaurant somewhere in Manhattan. As I perused the menu, someone asked about appetizers and mentioned sweetbreads. Me, not knowing what the hell sweetbreads were, agreed with that suggestion with much anticipation. The menu didn’t describe what sweetbreads were – just that they came with some sort of sauce. Ok, cool. We ordered the sweetbreads as an appetizer. Here, I am expecting a basket of warm, fresh, sweet rolls to appear at our table. Several minutes later, the server dropped off a plate of four small nugget-looking things swimming in this brown gravy. A few of us were confused. I shrugged my shoulders and tried a piece anyway. Wasn’t too bad – nothing to write home about. But probably not something I’d go out of my way to try again. Later on, someone looked up sweetbreads. They’re the thymus gland or pancreas of a calf or lamb. ? Though I probably won’t be having sweetbreads again any time soon, I’m glad I went all in and tried it anyway.
Last year, when I had a long layover in San Francisco, my crew and I decided to cycle down to the Golden Gate Bridge, across the bridge, down into Sausalito, and take a ferry back to the pier. While I was excited about this, I was also super nervous. I have a relative fear of heights, so cycling across the bridge was a bit scary for me. I’m also not well-versed in city cycling, so I’m always afraid that I’m going to get hit by a car whenever I cycle in a city. But, I did it and it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I got to have an iconic SFO experience. All because I didn’t let fear overtake me. And I don’t think my crewmembers would’ve let me stay back because of it. The picture that I use for Flight Attendant Tip Friday is one from this SFO cycling experience. 🙂
